No butterfly

On 26 April 2021, the WSR Plc Board announced it will not proceed with John Bailey’s idea of changing the organisational structure of the Railway.

I am very disappointed with their decision and their dismissal of the idea of transformation into a single membership charity.

It would all seem to be a dead parrot. And no butterfly either.

The Plc’s statement provides much to comment on, and to question, and perhaps the comments section of this page will be the place for these.

The need to concentrate on recovery from the effects of Covid are explained over and over – I think we already understand this and we are working hard on the current recovery priorities.

However, the detail within the Plc’s bullet points suggests the Plc are not convinced transformation into a single, membership based charity with its commercial arm will be better than the current set-up.

Clearly I do not agree. The Plc know my views.

I’ll try to be grown up about it all – and move on. Clearly much to consider.

This blog was created to carry information about the possible “changing shape” of our Railway as a result of the Bailey Report. The Plc’s unilateral announcement would appear to the end of the matter. And thus the end of the blog.

The blog will remain open for reference, for comments, and as a lament for something that would make for a much healthier and more successful Railway.

  1. IMHO. We must agree to disagree with the plc Board on an overarching charity and now the priority must be full recovery and restoration, and put such differences aside. I hope the majority will see it that way too.

  2. The railway will, therefore retain a 20th century governance structure in the 21st century. The same old issues will remain and I fear complete and total harmony will remain elusive. The old fiefdoms will continue however hard the Plc insist it won’t

  3. So – the Plc has spoken and (in effect) stamped down on Bailey and presumably will not bother to pursue it further if it can help it. Sad therefore to see that the ‘butterfly’ has decided to fly away…. Are we all going to just ‘roll over’ and keep quiet and let the ‘same old normal’ carry on at the WSR for ever and a day ????

The Plc is NOT the only player – what about the WSRA and the WSRHT? Will they just roll over as well ?

  4. To say that I am disappointed with the statement from the Plc is to put it mildly, but I am not at all surprised by this outcome. I fear for the long term future of the WSR and have little faith that the present incumbents of the Plc board are best suited to support that future. I also fear that the next action from the Plc will be the withdraw from the PDG.
